Day 396: Focusing on the Past

When you focus on the past, we remain stuck there. Often it’s easier to stay focused on what we know. Even if what we know is hurtful and brings us grief.

Step one is to be aware of our misgivings and the challenges we have in our lives. But when we focus on the past, we can remain stuck and act in a way that will keep us locked down and resistant to the growth.

Reminiscing on the pain and the harm we experienced as kids can remain trapped in what’s happened to us then.

Getting help means reaching out and admitting our problems and moving onward. Remaining stuck in the past will not help us move onward.

To heal, we have a choice: Remain stuck in the past or to let go and move on.

The stress and trauma of the past can be incapacitating, and it’s easy to remain paralyzed with not knowing what to do.

We can focus on our work, family, all the minor stresses or challenges of modern day life, but never spend the time and energy to heal from the past.

Healing comes from learning to let go and to move onward from what we suffered through.

As you go about your day, each of us has a choice. We can remain stuck in the past and carry the weight of anger and frustration with us. We can also remain a victim and be resistant to moving on because letting go of our identity of who we have been all our lives can be frightening.

When you decide to grow and heal, then we also question the roles that we’ve played in our lives.

Letting go of the past can be hard, but it’s not impossible.

You might need help to do so, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
