I had originally was going to write a really simple post about my shopping experience, but while out with friends last night I learned that a Wal-Mart temporary worker had been trampled to death at a Long Island store and that other customers were wounded over a gun fright at a store in California (though the shooting was not related to shopping).
My experience was pretty pleasant and I'm a bit shocked that people would trample through a store's doors to try and get to the bargains. However, when I stop to think about it I've seen some crazy things when I used to work in retail back when I was in college. I've seen women pushing and shoving in line as a mother was angry that her pregnant daughter was being pushed while they were waiting in line. I've seen people just grap arm loads of clothing and run out the door. People have tried to take back clothing they "purchase" but it was just stolen merchandise.
This year I had decided not to go out and face the crowds. But I changed my mind as the deal I wanted to get online wasn't available. I was a bit frustrated about that so I then went out and hit Staples, Home Depot, and BJ's. I was able to get all my shopping down and be back home by 8am, but I did go out at 5am so it was a long day yesterday.
So in retrospect my shopping experience was not really worth writing about compared to the story about someone being trampled to death. I really feel for this person's family as what type of holiday are they going to have, knowing that their loved one is now dead.
Maybe it's worth taking a step back and realizing that having a Wii or Blu-ray player or whatever else people want isn't the all-important, driving force this holiday season. Take a moment, give a hug to your loved ones and just enjoy the day.
I'm very thankful for all but now my kids are up and breakfast awaits. Can't keep hungry kids waiting! Peace.
