Relaxing
It’s been a difficult year. Lots of work, family issues, deadlines, podcasts, you name it—it’s been a full year. I would necessarily say that it’s been a rotten year, but it has been difficult. There’s always choices to be made between what you can do and what you want to do.
Professionally, it’s been a good year. On the writing front, I’ve had my work published in the SWFA’s The Bulletin, Inquest Gamer, Wizards of the Coast’s Dreamblade website, and Beckett’s Magic the Gathering magazine. I’ve had several stories rejected, but still no luck on having a short story of mine published. I’ve enjoyed the freelance writing work, but looking back at all that I did accomplish this year, it doesn’t add up to a huge sum of money. On the plus side, I was able to move forward and become an Affiliate member of the SWFA. In 2007, I’m looking forward to doing more networking and, hopefully, continue my freelance assignments.
What have I missed this past year? Time to hang out with my wife has been few and far between. Sure, we get to see each other, but to actually do something together—just the two of us—that hasn’t often much. I think I can count on my one hand the times that we had to go out to eat or go to a concert and relax. I love being a father, but it’d also be nice to spend time with my wife. I need to take some energy to fix that, and that’s going to take money as babysitting isn’t cheap.
In the few weeks that are left for this year, I’ll concentrate on cleaning up the house (the kitchen project finishes late this week) in preparation for Christmas. I’ve gifts to wrap and shopping left to do. I enjoy that though—should be fun. And I think that’s the main word that’s been missing from my vocabulary. Fun. Yep, simple old fun.
With the end of the year coming up, I’m going to take some time to chill out and relax. What does that mean? I might do a little 2007 prep work, but that’s it. I’m thinking of taking some time out from doing the podcast so that I can concentrate on relaxing.
I think what put all of this into perspective is my 3 (and nearly ½) year old son. He said to me: “Daddy, after we get the Christmas tree up. Mommy, you, and me will sit on the sofa with the lights off and watch it. You’ll drink beer or water and I’ll drink milk.” Wow, smart kid. You have to like that. And that’s what we did for a bit on Saturday afternoon. I sat there with my son next to me and my wife on the other side of the sofa with an Anchor Steam 2006 holiday beer in my hand, watching the Christmas tree lights blinking. Not a bad moment!
